Walking back from dropping our then-youngest, now middle, kid from pre-school a whole ten years ago, it suddenly occurred to me that it would be a great idea to offer open-ended, truly creative art projects outside of an art college class or museum workshops. It felt like one of those out of the blue, flash of lightning, life-defining thoughts that would change everything.
The idea has been a constant in our lives since then; we talked about it as we moved to New Zealand and had a third kid and moved back and started living in Maine. We talked about it as we got teaching jobs and I started a web design business. It swirled around on the periphery of our lives, taking various hypothetical forms, but it always remained on a backburner, waiting for the the right time. Of course, much like having a child, there never really is a perfect time to try something new, you just have to commit to taking the leap.
In March 2020, when the schools suddenly closed and the husband and I started teaching our college classes online, it occurred to me that it would be amazing if the art and creativity subscription box that I've been working on for so long actually existed in real life, as so many people were at home running out of interesting things to do. Unfortunately, I didn't have the bandwidth to make that happen. Between teaching online, being a full time teacher for my youngest and tech support for the other two during remote learning, and doing client design work, I could barely get any sleep never mind launch something new.
The last year, for so many of us (and I fully recognize my privilege in not being sick, having food on the table and a safe place to call home), was brutal at times. As fall and winter rolled around and the pandemic showed no sign of leaving, it somehow seemed even more bleak. The optimism of thinking we just have to work really hard on doing quarantine right so things can get back to normal, completely disappeared. Seemingly, so did much of the we're all in this together spirit which helped get us through the tougher times.
Although we now have the hope of the vaccine and warmer weather to look forward to, we're still essentially all still at home. It feels like launching the Creative Challenge art and creativity subscription box could not come at a better time. We all need something creative to do to help us decompress and take our mind off things, to help us get through the days. Travel and big gatherings have to wait, but we can make small gestures towards maintaining our own sanity and having some fun along the way. Think of a subscription to the box as a regular present for yourself that you don't have to arrange. Every month you'll get a surprise box sent to your door filled with potential, all you have do is sit down, make some time to get stuck in and make things. In return, you'll add creativity and positivity into your life by using your hands and brain for something waaaaaay more constructive than responding to idiotic comments on Facebook.
I'm really excited to finally, finally launch this venture, and really hope that you'll come along for the ride. Check out the subscription options for the Creative Challenge Box or signup below for the Thursday newsletter.
