HELLO, HERE AT LAST

HELLO, HERE AT LAST

Every now and then you read the very first blog post on a brand new business and it says that the business has been a dream for years and years and years and finally, it is here… I’ve opened a few businesses before this one, but I couldn’t in all honesty say that I had been dreaming about them. This one is different, we have literally been talking about it for years. This dream has been a big one. It’s been a constant in our lives without us managing to do anything too tangible about it, life always got in the way.

It’s a long and complicated story as to how we got to the point where we are now, where And Make Things is finally live, but I am so very, very pleased that this day is here. This website signifies our hopes and dreams not just for ourselves and for our family, but our hope that we can have an impact across the world by helping people keep creativity vibrant and strong in their lives.

AND MAKE THINGS family photo 2014My name is Helen, and this photo is one of the few we have of the whole family. I love it, it’s the photo we’d use if we were releasing an indie album. (Except that now the kids are way older than this and there's no way they'd let us use this picture...)

I’m a British artist, designer, lecturer and entrepreneur. My fellow-artist husband Lars is a Danish writer and art professor, and we have been making and exhibiting artwork together under the name tectonic industries, since 1999. We have three gorgeous, loud, very opinionated girls, A (15), O (13) and L (8). This is us in Portland, Maine, taken shortly after we arrived in our adopted home-town over seven years ago. We arrived here (sight-unseen) from New Zealand, previously we were in Minneapolis for 11 years, and before that we met at art college in Edinburgh, Scotland. Our two older kids are American, our youngest is a Kiwi-born Brit.

We genuinely believe that creativity changes the world, and we’re here to help you prioritize creativity in your lives. I’ll be blogging here once a week and sending out a newsletter every Thursday. Why not sign up below and make space for some quality creative time in your life?
